V Slovick

I walk down the street, with my eyes focused downward to see if
I come across something abject by chance. Searching for uncertainty.
Objects that have the potential for disappearance such as discarded
wood, signage, cardboard, pallets, and other found objects. These
improvisational surfaces become the substrates for my work with their
distinct qualities and inform further moves I make. I draw meaning
from their history of marks showing trajectory, and transportation. I
believe the poetics of discarded material act as a threshold for
information, calling attention to its origins, lived experiences, and
the moment of chance it’s discovered.
My intention is to capture this occurrence, and extract a kind
of eternity from its ephemerality. Seeking to draw connections
between this balance to pull the viewer into the mundane as something
that can be familiar, bright, and explosive - something that can be
reflective of movement.
I am interested in the meanings that are created by intervening
with the object in the studio with paint of any kind, charcoal, or
chalk pastel as a way to kind of liberate the object from its past. A
balance between preserving its qualities as it has existed in the
world, then creating this bridge into a crossroads of what it means
to be a painting. My practice is compelled by crossings between the
natural and architectural. It reflects tension between preservation
and change.
